Rockwood Academy is an expanding secondary school within the suburbs of Birmingham. Presently, the academy has a capacity of 648 students and is increasing this to 1,050 by 2020.
The proposal addresses this via a careful combination of reconfiguration of the existing space in the academy building, to make more efficient and better use of the area. An extension will be added to the front of the existing academy building, with the two joined together by a delicately detailed link.
The project includes the construction of a new teaching block featuring 14 new classrooms, plus a state-of-the-art library, specialist dance studio, improved science labs and additional music practice rooms. The teaching block will act as the new gateway to the school. There will also be a stunning new atrium with a social space at the centre, to provide a new heart to the school.
